How a Mentor Can Benefit Your College Experience

College is a wonderful time to explore your passions, meet new people, and learn something new. The world is full of possibilities, which is exciting but can be overwhelming. Luckily, we have Meredith Mentors, a program to help guide you through college life and even your career.

The Meredith Alumnae Association and Office of Career Planning offer an online mentoring program called Meredith Mentors. Currently, there are over 2,000 users on the platform representing 24 states, the District of Columbia, 9 countries, and 58 different industries or career fields.

Here are the top three ways you can benefit from Meredith Mentors.

Academic Guidance

Meredith has over 90 majors to choose from, so you’re sure to find your niche. But what if you don’t know what major suits you? What is being a student in a particular major like? What are the classes like? What courses should you take? That’s where a mentor steps in.

You’ll be able to connect with graduates who were in the majors you’re interested in and get the answers to your questions. They’ve been in your shoes, and they know first-hand what it’s like to be a student in that major.

Navigating Campus Life

At Meredith, getting involved in life outside the classroom is just as important as studying hard. Expanding your horizons helps make you stronger and opens a whole world of opportunities. As a Meredith student, there are many student life opportunities available to you, including:

Considering all of these extracurricular activities, deciding what to join as a first-year student might be difficult. A mentor can help you shift through the activities available and tell you about the clubs and traditions they were a part of at Meredith.

Career Guidance

At Meredith, we want to make sure you are prepared to enter your field after graduating, and so does your mentor.

Your mentor can help you by

  • Reviewing your resume
  • Finding internships
  • Finding job shadowing opportunities
  • Identifying your strengths
  • Creating connections in a new city
  • Directing you toward an industry that best suits you.

You can also gain insights on graduate or professional school, financial literacy, career transition, re-entering the workforce, relocation, career advancement, and negotiation of salaries.

College is an exciting and pivotal time in your life. Having a guide to help you navigate the twists and turns will alleviate your anxieties and prepare you for the life you’ve always wanted to live.
