Children of Fallen Heroes

Classification: First Year, Transfer, Upperclass Students
The Award:

A maximum Pell Grant for every Pell-eligible student whose parent or guardian died in the line of duty while performing as a public safety officer. A public safety officer includes

  • a fire police officer
  • an individual serving a public agency in an official capacity, with or without compensation, as a law enforcement officer, firefighter, or chaplain;
  • an employee of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) who is performing official duties and whose official duties are related to a major disaster or emergency;
  • an employee of a State, local, or tribal emergency management or civil defense agency who is performing official duties in cooperation with FEMA
  • a member of a rescue squad or ambulance crew who is engaging in rescue activity or in the provision of emergency medical services

How to apply:

Student must be Pell-egible and have a Pell-eligible EFC, and be less than 24 years of age or enrolled at an institution of higher education at the time of her parent’s or guardian’s death. All Title IV aid must be based on an EFCof zero without regard to the student’s calculated EFC. Student is eligible for the maximum Pell Grant for her enrollment status and cost of attendance. The student’s eligibility for Direct Loans for Campus-based program aid must be based on an EFC of zerio.
