Undergraduate Research Program to Host Conference
- Published
Meredith College will host a weeklong celebration of undergraduate research October 8-13, 2018, culminating in the Women’s Undergraduate Research Conference (WURC) on Saturday.
The conference, which will be held on Meredith’s campus, is open to all students in the Cooperating Raleigh Colleges (CRC), a nonprofit consortium that promotes collaboration among higher education institutions in Raleigh. Participants will have the opportunity to present their research while also attending networking sessions. Walda Powell, professor of chemistry, physics, and geoscience, and Andrea Marritt, associate professor of biological sciences, will present the keynote address for the conference.
Meredith’s undergraduate research program hosts Celebrating Student Achievement Day each year in the spring when the campus community and guests celebrate academic and research accomplishments by Meredith students. The full day of events includes a research conference, awards ceremonies, dance and musical performances, art exhibits, and panel discussions.
At least 51% of Meredith students engage in a serious research project. In comparison, a 2016 national survey of thousands of campuses found that only 24% of undergraduate students report doing research. In addition, students conduct research in all majors, which gives every student the opportunity to participate.
