The Library Celebrates its 50th Anniversary in the Carlyle Campbell Library

On Founders’ Day this year, the library staff hosted a celebration to acknowledge the 50th Anniversary of the Carlyle Campbell Library building.

In 1969 the library moved from Johnson Hall to its current site. To help with moving all the books across campus, students, faculty, and staff were given the day off. The day is known as the Book-In and the community moved over 52,000 volumes into the new library!

On February 27, 2019, the campus and alumnae were invited to celebrate the library’s birthday with five different cakes, each representing one decade that the Library building has served the community. Hosted on the main floor, attendees gathered not only to indulge their sweet tooth, but to reminisce on their favorite time spent in the library and their participation in the Book-In by filling out memory cards noting their favorite memory of the library. These will be collected made into a book that will become part of the Meredith archives.

The library has a lot to celebrate on its 50th Anniversary, including some exciting changes to the building that will be happening over spring break. On the main floor of the library, a new food service point called Food for Thought will be installed by Aramark. The space will offer sandwiches, salads, drinks, snacks, and more for sale. The hours will be Mondays-Thursdays 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 6-9 p.m., Fridays 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday 1-9 p.m.

Also, on our ground floor, we are renovating the LINC Center starting on March 6. We will be flipping the space so the front of the classroom will be in what is now the back of the space. Computer stations will be installed along the two walls and new desks and chairs will complete the space. There will also be a new seating area near the entrance of the classroom. These changes will better support our information literacy instruction, as well provide a more inviting study space for students when instruction is not underway.

It has been our honor to serve as the heart of Meredith’s learning community and we look forward to continuing this endeavor for another 50 years and beyond!
