Re-imagining Spring 2020 Events and Traditions

While the Office of Student Leadership and Service (SLS) understands the disappointment in not being able to have many of Meredith’s traditional spring events as they were originally planned, the staff in this office and in other departments have taken steps to create new ways for students to be together this semester. Events have been re-imagined and creative social media initiatives have been launched. The goal has been to participate virtually in new ways to build community and find moments to have some fun. Numerous spring events have been changed to virtual experiences or the date has changed.

The Crook Hunt is taking place through a Crook Hunt Instagram account. The seniors will post clues each day for a week. Each day that clues are posted Juniors who attempt to guess the location will be entered into a drawing to win a gift card. If the correct location of the Crook is guessed, a prize will be awarded to the Junior with the correct guess.

The Meredith Recreation Association will host a social media campaign to encourage students to create a TikTok, Instagram post, or Twitter post of them doing something fun outside on the original date of Stunt, April 17.

Rising juniors will be attending a virtual Big Sister Boot Camp training prior to enrolling as a Big Sister in the Big Sister/Little Sister Program.

The Residents Housing Association sponsored an online movie party/viewing of A Cinderella Story.

The Freshman Fire and Water Dinner (sponsored by the Office of First Year Experience) will have a sneak peek virtual event this spring with a tentative plan to move the event to a date in fall 2020.

Tea for Two for the sophomore class has been postponed to Saturday, September 19th at the Crabtree Valley Marriott. Members of the Class of 2022 will receive additional emailed instructions from the Tea for Two co-chairs with further event details.

Many more events are being re-imagined as the semester continues.

The Office of Student Leadership and Service also is staying connected with students through some new social media initiatives. There is Motivation Monday that includes fun quotes and other motivating photos. For the middle of the week there is #WithmyQuarenTIME Wednesday as an opportunity for students to tell others what they have been doing with their “extra” time. Perhaps they have found a new hobby or cleaned out a closet. Students can end the week with Fun Post Friday. Every other week we will be going live for a fun activity on Fridays. The other weeks will feature a fun or silly post. Daily on their story have been posting suggestions for Boredom Busters to help pass the time – TikToks, Netflix suggestions, playlists, videos, or anything else that a student wants to do to be engaged in this way. Students can follow SLS at @MeredithSLS.
