President’s Message: In Remembrance of Ruth Bader Ginsburg
- Published
President Jo Allen, ’80, shared the following statement on September 23, 2020, the one year anniversary of Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s visit to Meredith College.
One year ago today, Meredith College proudly hosted Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg for an afternoon with students and an evening interview with former dean of the Wake Forest School of Law and Meredith alumna, Suzanne Reynolds. To say ‘it was a day to remember’ is both a cliched understatement and evidence of the challenge to capture what an extraordinary time this was with an extraordinary woman.
The interview was sponsored by the Lillian Parker Wallace Lecture Series. Justice Ginsburg was honored with the Meredith College Woman of Achievement Award at the beginning of the evening.
A year later, our community remains energized by our interactions with RBG that day and inspired by the legacy she leaves. Her heart and her mind were fiercely focused on humanity and the law, and her ability to weigh the impact of cases and her decisions on people and the country was a huge part of what made her so special.
Regardless of whether people agreed with her decisions, her reputation for getting along with her colleagues of all opinions is a reminder to us all that disagreements are special calls for civility—especially in these complex times. May we honor her by carrying on her commitment to reasoning and justice.
