New Articulation Agreement Will Benefit Meredith Students

Leaders of Meredith College and the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) have formally signed an articulation agreement that will benefit Meredith graduates who apply to VCOM for admission into its Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) program.

At the ceremony, Meredith President Jo Allen said VCOM serves the national need for a healthier population, and Meredith College was fortunate to become a partner with the medical college, which seeks to provide medical care in underserved areas.

Provost Matthew Poslusny noted the growth of Meredith students interested in health careers. There are currently more than 150 students at Meredith who identify with pre-health programs.

“As the program continues to grow, the articulation agreement with VCOM will benefit our students tremendously,” Poslusny said.  “It provides a framework for preparation and helps students set goals that, when met, will give them an excellent opportunity to be interviewed by a medical school.”

The articulation agreement applies to both graduates of Meredith’s undergraduate programs and to those who complete the College’s pre-health post-baccalaureate certificate program. Meredith is the only school with which VCOM has an articulation agreement at both the undergraduate and post-baccalaureate levels.

Representing VCOM was founder John Rocovich, Jr., and Associate Vice President Bill King.

Rocovich said VCOM is a “medical school that looks like America. We are very proud of that.” He also noted that there are five Meredith College alumnae and post-baccalaureate alumni in their first year at VCOM, and three more are further along in the program.

At the signing event, Dean of Meredith’s School of Natural and Mathematical Sciences Liz Wolfinger recognized the efforts of faculty in her school in building the health professions program.

“On behalf of Meredith College, I thank Drs. Karthik Aghoram, Francie Cuffney, and Andrea Marritt for their commitment to and outstanding work in building a health professions advising office and post-baccalaureate pre-health program in the last three years,” Wolfinger said.  She also thanked Drs. Aghoram and Marritt for working with closely with VCOM to establish Meredith’s first articulation agreements with a medical school.

Meredith College also offers a pre-health post-baccalaureate certificate program, the only program of its kind in the Triangle. Designed for individuals with bachelor’s degrees, the program offers two distinct tracks. The preparation track provides non-science degree holders the opportunity to earn prerequisite coursework needed for admission into health programs. The enhancement track is designed for students who need to enhance their academic credentials for re-application to medical school.
