New Art Exhibition Together-We are Having a Good Day
- Published
The art exhibition Together-We are Having a Good Day is on view in Johnson Hall through November 11.
Together features art by mother and son duo Yuko Taylor and King Godwin, whose bond influences each of their own personal expression within their bodies of work. Apart from being an artist, Taylor’s life work has been to support Godwin, an adult with autism. Godwin transfers his feelings and what is true to him onto canvas using bright, vibrant colors along with numbers that hold a special significance. Taylor, a Japanese-American, Nihonga and oil painter, has exhibited works globally and draws inspiration from modern Western art and Japanese historical imagery.
While Godwin expresses his day, Taylor relays timelessness through her depiction of nature. Godwin teaches Taylor the true meaning of how art impacts human beings, and in return, she motivates her son to keep pursuing his art.
While the COVID-19 quarantine world diminished the community that supported them, Godwin helped Taylor realize the only thing of importance was how to live their day-to-day lives — through painting. Through this revelation, they recognized there was no loss.
“We are thankful that we have art in our lives,” Taylor wrote. “We are together and having a good day.”
Two events are planned on October 29 in conjunction with Together-We Are Having a Good Day.
At 3:30 p.m., a Gallery Talk with Yuko Taylor and King Godwin, who will share their artistic process in conjunction with their shared art exhibit. This presentation will be offered as a Zoom webinar.
An in-person artist reception will be held from 4:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Registration is required and attendance is limited for this event. Meredith College COVID-19 community standards, including wearing a face covering and social distancing, are required. Register online for this event.
