Message from the Alumnae Association President – Winter 2016

If you missed Meredith’s first Homecoming on November 4-5, you really missed a great time! More than 400 of us from classes ranging from 1941 to 2016 gathered on campus to celebrate our alma mater at its most festive time of year. We began by leading the Cornhuskin’ parade down the main drive on Friday afternoon followed by all the current undergraduate classes. If you didn’t see any photos on Facebook there were some of us dressed as corn, some dressed as hogs, and a lot of folks with their class sweatshirts from Cornhuskins gone by.

Alumnae took over Jones Auditorium on Friday night and had our own corn shucking and apple bobbing competitions in addition to having alumnae Oddballs and Bathtub Ring performances. There were prizes for those of us who knew the most Meredith Trivia and we munched on popcorn as we watched the undergraduate skits from the amphitheater on a giant screen. I hope you watched some of the fun on YouTube Live! After Cornhuskin’ ended, the Young Alumnae Board feted us at the Brickhouse across Hillsborough Street from campus.

President Jo Allen gave alumnae an update on the State of the College on Saturday morning at brunch and then we broke up to attend seminars on our choice of politics, religion, or StrongPoints. A tour of the newly renovated Johnson Hall concluded the weekend. And needless to say, no Meredith event would be complete without a T-shirt to commemorate the occasion—and we had them!

I want to give special thanks to Alumnae Association President-Elect Amanda Steele Johnson, who spearheaded the planning and execution of this great weekend, and all of our Board members and other alumnae volunteers who made it such a great success. But without the tireless effort of Hilary Allen and the Office of Alumnae Relations, we couldn’t have made this happen.

And so a new tradition has been born at Meredith! If you were here, I hope you will join in the fun again next year, and if you weren’t here, I hope you will be in 2017!
