Meredith and BB&T Host Cyber Security Career Panel

Meredith College and BB&T hosted a panel discussion with cyber security engineers from cities across North Carolina on March 21, 2018.

Three cyber security engineers participated in the panel Payment Security Engineer Don Elsner, Cyber Threat Analyst Christy Long, and Cyber Threat Analyst Lori Stroud.

Welcomed by Jane Matthews, of Meredith’s Office of Career Planning, the panelists were invited to spend time with the Meredith students in attendance and to share information about their career paths and the field of IT security.

Long and Stroud shared how they have navigated in a traditionally male-dominated field and how they inspire others as role models and mentors. Also emphasized in the discussion was that careers in cyber security can evolve from both technical and non-technical degrees.

Lori (Stone) Sturtevant, ’88, Technical Recruiting consultant for BB&T, teamed with Jane Matthews to create the panel forum in an effort to bring Cyber Security Career awareness to the students.

Long and Stroud agreed that hands on experience such as an internship or project-based involvement are key to building credibility and confidence in information security.

The panel members compiled a list of free technical online resources and volunteered to partner as student mentors.
