Assistant Professor of Communication Alan Buck was recently selected to become a specialist for the Fulbright Program, the largest educational and cultural exchange program in the country.
Fulbright Specialists are highly experienced, well-established faculty members and professionals who are selected through a competitive application process. Once selected, specialists are eligible to be matched with host institutions from more than 150 countries to consult on projects dealing with their area of expertise.
“For me, that will mean helping an institution produce video and social media content,” said Buck. “If an institution has a new program they want to roll out, for example, I could produce a video for them advertising that new program and help with strategies to deliver the video to their target audiences.”
Buck has years of experience in the field of digital media. Prior to teaching at Meredith and serving as the director of the digital communication certificate program, he worked in television news and earned his master’s degree in interactive media from Elon University.
Through Elon’s program, Buck had the opportunity to study abroad, which is when he discovered a passion for international consulting. He has produced videos for organizations in Portugal, Rwanda, and has plans to consult on media strategy in Sansepolcro, Italy, next summer.
Upon learning about the Fulbright Specialist Program while serving on a scholarship committee, Buck saw yet another opportunity to build on his passion for travel and production. “Once I read the description of the Fulbright Specialist program, I knew I had to apply,” he said. “I absolutely love to travel, and so to be able to pair that with my love to help others through my skill set, it was a no-brainer.”
As a participant in the program, Buck will join the ranks of thousands of successful Fulbright alumni; some of whom have gone on to become Nobel Prize recipients, Pulitzer Prize winners, and government officials.
Buck is excited for this opportunity to expand his network globally and to share his knowledge and expertise with others. “In the past couple years, international video consulting and producing has become my area of expertise and passion,” he said. “The ability to produce content for someone who might otherwise struggle in this area is extremely rewarding and exciting.”
