Avenging Angels 2019 Spring Sports Update
- Published
The Meredith College athletics staff introduced several new faces this year, including two new head coaches. LaQuanda Barksdale Quick joined the team in July 2018 as the new full-time head basketball coach. Working with a roster of eight healthy players, Quick has pushed her team from a tough start to a recent streak with four wins in the last six games.
The team trusts Quick’s system including patience on offense, and the small roster size no longer interferes with the team’s success on the court. Recruiting efforts are underway for the next several years with the rise of Avenging Angels basketball a promising college feature.
Former Meredith assistant soccer coach Jen Grubb assumed the reins of the program as head coach in January. In contact with the 2019 recruiting class, she hopes to fill a few more open spots for next fall and has already begun scouting for the future. She will direct the team through the short spring season beginning in March to prepare the returning players for strong run in the USA South next fall.
Athletic Director Jackie Myers also welcomed new assistant coaches to the lacrosse, track & field, volleyball, and basketball programs. Each of these new staffers are working hard to promote Meredith athletics on the recruiting trail, while working with our current teams.
With the conclusion of the indoor track and field season February 3 in Newport News, Virginia, Head Coach Leslie Payne picks up several athletes from other sports teams later this month to kick off the outdoor season. With the launch of outdoor track & field as the USA South’s newest sponsored sport, the Avenging Angels will join their league counterparts in mid-April at a conference championship in hosted by Berea College. Student-athletes will also be eligible for conference weekly honors, as well as end-of-season awards.
Assistant Athletic Director Samantha Maziejka and the rest of the athletics staff welcomed 30 alumnae-athletes to campus February 2 for a Meredith athletics reunion. The group arrived in time to support the basketball team in action versus Methodist University and remained on campus for dinner and program to catch up on all the latest in each other’s lives, as well as learn more about the current Avenging Angels athletics program.
On February 3, the College honored the 2018 championship lacrosse team and recognized athletes Carlee Joseph and Holly Hite, specifically. USA South Commissioner Tom Hart presented Joseph with the 2018 Don Scalf Female Student-Athlete of the Year award, and she was also recognized as the 2018 IWLCA Division III Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Hite was touted as the program’s first recipient of an IWLCA Division III All-American selection, as a member of the 2018 third team.
The other spring sports of lacrosse, softball, and tennis are well underway and preparing for competition this month.
