Alumnae Share Quarantine Reading List

More down time while we social distance provides an opportunity to get lost in some good books. Are you looking for book recommendations to add to your quarantine reading list? Here are suggestions from some of our alumnae:
Elizabeth Hamilton McLamb, ’01, just finished reading Lilac Girls, by Martha Hall Kelly and notes that the book features “strong women during World War II. If they can make it through that time period, then I can definitely survive being stuck at home with plenty of food and internet.”
Caroline Austin Ashburn, ’11, shares that A Gentleman in Moscow, by Amor Towles “is an amazing novel because it is so well-written, entertaining, and educational. I learned a lot about the Cold War and communism by reading it. For nonfiction, I’d recommend The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, by Rebecca Skloot. The reader will learn a lot about scientific, social, and historical issues. The author is a young white woman from the Pacific Northwest who was not very familiar with Southern culture and social issues when she began her research. I found her perspective very interesting.”
Glenda Brown Worley, ’65, recommends Confederacy of Dunces, by John Kennedy Toole. Worley notes that this is “one of her favorites. Set in New Orleans with wonderful characters, this is the funniest book I’ve ever read and re-read.”
What is on your Quarantine Reading List? We would like to continue to share book recommendations with the campus community as well as our alumnae. If you have a book recommendation to share, please send it along with some details on why it made your reading list to alumnae@meredith.edu.
