Dr. Mary Huntimer is an active saxophonist and woodwind teacher in the Research Triangle. She performs with the Tresidig Trio, Triangle Wind Ensemble, the North Carolina Saxophone Ensemble, the Chapel Hill Philharmonia, the Bull City Saxophone Quartet, and the Triangle Afrobeat Orchestra. Dr. Huntimer teaches saxophone at Meredith College, the Cary School of Music, and is a clinician throughout the Triangle. Dr. Huntimer’s current research is on the history of how the saxophone became a solo instrument in opera. Her website,, contains a database of all operas and ballets that include the saxophone and she has also researched women saxophonists in the early twentieth century. Dr. Huntimer has performed with leading jazz figures such as Gary Foster, Rich Perry, Tim Ries, Ingrid Jensen, and James Miley, and can be heard as a soloist on the University of Kansas Wind Ensemble recording, Wild Nights, released in 2008 on Naxos. She has performed nationally as well as at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and throughout Germany. Dr. Huntimer has also performed at a number of regional and national conferences, including North American Saxophone Alliance and the Navy Saxophone Symposium. Dr. Huntimer graduated with a DMA in saxophone performance at the University of Kansas in 2012; a MM in saxophone performance from University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2007; and a BME from South Dakota State University in 2004.
