Profile

W. David Lynch served as head of the department of music from 1969 until 2008 and as professor of music from 1969 to the present.  He has degrees from Oberlin College (B.M.) and the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester (M.M., D.M.A., Performer’s Certificate).  He has studied further at the Akademie “Mozarteum” in Salzburg, Austria; with concert organist André Marchal in Paris, France; and with Arthur Poister at Syracuse University.  He spent two sabbatical leaves studying theology and related subjects at Duke University Divinity School.  From 1971 until 2012 he was Organist-Choirmaster at Christ Church in Raleigh. Following retirement from full-time teaching in 2010, he was ordained a deacon in the Episcopal Church and served as Deacon for the Church of the Nativity and as a resident chaplain at Rex Hospital, in addition to his part-time teaching at Meredith.  He has been a national officer of the National Association of Schools of Music as well as Meredith’s NASM representative.  His professional activities include performances as organ recitalist, clinician in church music and organ workshops, choral conducting, and visiting evaluator and consultant for NASM.
