Statement in Support of DACA Students — July 2021

Late last week, a ruling by a federal judge again put the status of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program into question. The ruling that the DACA program is unlawful will be appealed, but in light of this uncertainty I wanted to reassure our campus community that Meredith College’s support of Dreamers remains constant.

As a reminder, these students were underage—sometimes even infants—when their parents brought them here. Many have known no other country than the USA and have no ties to their country of origin. They live and study and work among us, and they make our lives better.

Meredith remains steadfast in our support of all students, whether they are documented or undocumented. Our students make up the fabric of our community, and as I wrote in my statement on DACA in 2017, we pride ourselves on being a family. I have already been in touch with communications and government relations professionals and have asked how I may help.

Students who need additional support are encouraged to make use of the professional resources available here at Meredith, including the Office of International Programs, Counseling Center, Chaplain, and Dean of Students staff.

We are here for you.
