Safety Reminders for Campus Community Members

Meredith College’s Chief of Campus Police Al White has compiled the following safety tips for college students. These are good reminders for all campus community members.

• Be Alert – Always be aware of your surroundings, especially when walking alone. When walking at night try to stay in well-lit areas that are populated and be cautious.
• Trust Your Instincts – Go with your gut; don’t dismiss your suspicious feelings. Trust your judgment and avoid situations that don’t feel right. 
• Keep Your Vehicle in Good Working Order – Make sure your car is filled with gas and in good working order prior to traveling.
• Park in a Well-Lit Area – Park away from large trees or shrubs. Avoid areas with poor visibility by others such as isolated buildings.
• Lock Your Car and Keep Belongings Out of Sight – Avoid leaving items on the seat of the car, store them out of sight. Lock your car as soon as you enter and exit your vehicle and keep your keys in hand when walking towards your car for quick access.
• Keep Friends and Family Updated – Share your location with friends and/or family members. Let them know when you’re expected back and when you’re done.
• Be Aware of Your Online Presence – Be aware of what personal information you share online. Sharing information like your location with the public can endanger your safety.
• Report Suspicious Activity – See something, say something. Reporting suspicious activity can help protect you and other people.
• Check Entrances – Make sure doors and windows are locked, especially if you live on the first floor. Use peepholes and chain locks if available.
• Educate Yourself – Be aware of the safety and security measures available in your area.
• Have a Plan – Always have a plan in case of an emergency. Whether the plan involves exiting a living area safely or knowing how to defend yourself in a threatening situation, it is always good to be prepared.

These useful tips have proven to be beneficial. Keep them in the back of your mind and review them frequently. Your safety is very important to the Meredith community.
