Retired Faculty and Staff Luncheon Held

The Office of Institutional Advancement held its annual Retired Faculty and Staff Luncheon on September 27, 2024.

For 15 years this event has reconnected Meredith College retirees. It was evident on their faces how much they enjoyed seeing each other and learning about the latest news from Meredith College.

President Aimee Sapp was pleased to introduce herself to the retirees. She gave them updates about Meredith’s future nursing degree, graduate programs, enrollment, expanding the College’s footprint, and increasing marketing efforts. She also talked about why she chose to come to Meredith and the warm welcome she has received from everyone since moving in July.

More than 50 retirees attended the event. Institutional Advancement staff appreciated so many retired faculty and staff for attending the luncheon and hoped seeing fellow retired co-workers felt like coming home.

“The connections that retired faculty and staff have made with each other is demonstrated during the faculty and staff luncheon,” said Astra Ball, director of advancement services. “This is in a world where people change jobs every five years so this is unique and beautiful to witness. These retirees have been through major life changes like weddings, births, and funerals together and they value the community they built while they were here.”

Many retired faculty and staff stay in touch with each other and their families. Mary Bland Josey, ’51, has certainly stayed connected to her former boss’s granddaughter. Josey was former President Carlyle Campbell’s assistant in public relations for eight years from 1958-1966. According to Morna Gersho, Campbell’s granddaughter, Josey has stayed connected to her for almost 50 years. Over the years they have met and exchanged emails. They had lunch together this past year. Josey once arranged for them to tour Campbell’s former home in Raleigh and they plan to meet again in October when Gersho visits from her residence in California. Gersho feels like Josey has kept her grandfather’s legacy alive and for that she is grateful.
