Meredith to Commemorate Veterans Day November 7, 2018

Meredith College will hold its annual Honoring Women Veterans event on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018, at 10 a.m. in Jones Chapel.

This year’s keynote speaker will be E. Bruce Heilman, a Marine Corps veteran and Meredith College’s fifth president. His speech is titled, “What it’s like to die for your country or why they never talked about it.”

Heilman served in World War II and later was Meredith College president from 1966-71. From 1971-86 he served as president of the University of Richmond, where he holds the position of chancellor.

Heilman is also a founder of the Museum of the Marines, a 14-year member of the Board of Trustees for the Marine Corps University. He served on the Heritage Foundation Board while the museum was being built, served as a trustee on the Board of Trustees of the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, Texas for 35 years; and continues to be a member of the Board of the Virginia War Memorial.

Other Meredith Veterans Day Activities:
See a special presentation of the movie Blood Stripe at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, November 7, in Ledford 101. The movie is the story of a woman Marine’s return home after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. There will be an introduction, beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by the film and then a discussion with Meredith College veterans, representatives from the Counseling Center, and the co-writer and actress from the movie, Kate Nowlin, via remote. Blood Stripe is not advisable for children under 17 without parent or guardian due to adult subject matter, including strong language, adult situations, and violence.

Make holiday cards for the Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes Program. Card supplies will be available in the Cate Center Lobby from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., November 5-16.

Flags of Honor will be displayed at the front drive November 5-9, honoring all service members.

The Honoring Women Veterans Committee and the Office of Student Leadership and Service are collaborating with the USO at RDU airport, providing support and amenities for traveling active duty and retired military members in transit. They are currently in need of supplies, which may be donated in the SLS Office (202 Cate Center) by Friday, November 16.

Attendance at the Honoring Women Veterans event and the movie viewing both count for Academic/Cultural Event credit
