Meredith Participates in Conference at National Civil Rights Museum

Four Meredith College representatives attended the Independent Colleges and the Legacies of Slavery conference held at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tenn., on Sept. 19-21, 2024.

Professor of Political Science David McLennan, Professor of History Dan Fountain, Dean of the School of Arts & Humanities Sarah Roth, and alumna Daphne Moore, ’19, participated in the conference.

The conference was the culmination of Meredith’s four years participating in the Legacies of American Slavery Initiative funded by the Mellon Foundation and led by the Council of Independent Colleges and the Gilder Lehrman Center at Yale University.

The grant from this initiative funded Meredith’s Voices of Change project, which included a political institute and an oral history collection.

Fountain delivered a presentation as part of the “Introduction to the Regional Collaboration Partners” panel, introducing Meredith’s work as part of the initiative. McLennan was one of three panelists for the “Finding Allies, Building Networks” panel.

Roth and Moore participated in conference discussions and Q&As and networked with key educational leaders at the conference. Moore, who has served with McLennan as co-director of Meredith’s Voices of Change Political Institute, is a staff member in the office of Congresswoman Deborah Ross.
