Meredith HESS Accepted into American College of Sports Medicine Program

Meredith’s Health, Exercise, and Sport Sciences (HESS) program has been accepted into the American College of Sports Medicine Exercise Is Medicine On Campus program.

Exercise is Medicine® On Campus (EIM-OC) calls upon universities and colleges to promote physical activity as a vital sign of health.

EIM-OC encourages faculty, staff, and students to work together toward improving the health and well-being of the campus community by:

  • Making movement a part of the daily campus culture
  • Assessing physical activity at every student health visit
  • Providing students with the tools necessary to strengthen healthy physical activity habits that can last a lifetime
  • Connecting university health care providers with university health fitness specialists to provide a referral system for exercise prescription.

Meredith’s EIMOC programs include: Health and Physical Learning courses for General Education, Health and Human Performance Laboratory community testing services, the Lowery Fitness Center, and the HESS Movement Lab activities such as WOW and AIM, the HESS Clinical Exercise program, and our Sports Science Association’s Trick-or-Trot 5k fun run.

“By participating in EIM-OC, the HESS program fosters a campus environment where movement and physical wellness are centralized, reinforcing the program’s message that ‘exercise is medicine’ in everyday life,” said Associate Professor of Health, Exercise and Sport Sciences Heather Sanderson.

Meredith’s ACSM EIM-OC committee members are Heather Sanderson, Director of Health Services Mary Johnson, Professor of Practice Sharon Malley, and two HESS student leaders, Sierra Grande and Emma Kate Segedy.
