Meredith Day of Caring Supports Habitat for Humanity

Meredith College employees participated in the College’s first Day of Caring, supporting Habitat for Humanity of Wake County. The volunteer opportunity was organized by Human Resources.

During the Habitat for Humanity work day, held on December 5, Meredith employees helped with the organization’s Old Poole Place project. Located in Southeast Raleigh, this 114-home neighborhood will eventually feature 60 single-family homes and 54 townhomes. It is Habitat for Humanity of Wake County’s largest project to date.

“We used the day as a hands-on volunteer experience to support Habitat for

Humanity and its mission to build affordable housing for local families,” said Associate Vice President for Human Resources Pamela Galloway. “It was a chance to roll up our sleeves and make a difference, all while connecting with colleagues from across campus.”

Volunteers included:

  • Mary Bryant, Counseling Center & Disability Services / Residence Life
  • Liza Bunce, Marketing & Communications
  • Emily Caldwell, StrongPoints
  • Stanley Daniels, Campus Police
  • Marissa De La Cruz, Marketing & Communications
  • Rebecca Duncan, English / General Education
  • Pamela Galloway, Human Resources
  • Jill Jenkins, Admissions / Financial Assistance
  • Matthew Noller, Accounting
  • Maria Pickering, Biological Sciences
  • Judith Schram, Registrar’s Office
  • Bill Schmidt, Chemistry / Physics / Geoscience

In addition, Charles Taylor, Campus Police, supported the project by driving the volunteers to the worksite.

The Meredith volunteers enjoyed participating in the project, which provided an opportunity to do service in community with other co-workers.

“I always enjoy service projects, and being able to represent Meredith while giving back to the community seemed like a wonderful opportunity. I’ve never served at a Habitat site before, and I wanted to learn more about it. Even in one service day, I learned so much about Habitat and how they give back to the community,” said Marissa De La Cruz.

De La Cruz recommends the Day of Caring experience to others at Meredith.

“I always have so much fun participating in service events like this. I encourage anyone looking to interact with colleagues outside of their departments and wanting to serve in the community to participate,” De La Cruz said.  “I like to participate in HR’s community events as much as I can.”

Galloway said another volunteer day opportunity will be available later this spring.
