Lowery Fitness Center Personal Training Proves Popular

The Lowery Fitness Center continues to go strong after being open for a semester. Since opening in late August, usage of the fitness center has remained steady at approximately 300% increase from the old facility and continues to grow this spring semester.

A new personal training program is responsible for a portion of that increase. The program, which was piloted in the fall semester with one personal trainer, is free for all students, faculty, and staff to work one-on-one with a certified personal trainer to get individualized training sessions to achieve health and wellness goals.

Because of the success of the pilot program, there are now five personal trainers on staff for the spring, offering approximately 30 training sessions per week. The personal trainers help clients determine goals, create exercise plans, and track progress to achieve goals. Students, faculty, and staff can sign up for 1 hour, 45 min, or 30 min personal training sessions through an online calendar on the Lowery Fitness Center section of the Meredith College website.

Also this spring, the Lowery Fitness Center has started offering group exercise classes such as Total Body Strengthening for Meredith students free of charge. Both of these programs are great ways for individuals to become oriented with the Center’s equipment and with exercise technique. We hope to continue to see them grow.

A $1 million gift from Ann Lowery, ʼ74, named the new fitness center after her parents, Herman and Ruth Lowery.  In addition to Lowery’s gift, The Parents Fund raised $135,000 over two years to support the Fitness Center renovation. And a gift from The Cannon Foundation helped to support the fitness renovation in an effort to enhance enrollment and retention.
