Less than a Month Until Cornhuskin’ 2017!

Let the countdown begin! Cornhuskin’ is perhaps Meredith College’s largest and most well attended tradition, and many students appreciate their families’ attendance. It’s a great way to support your student and cheer on their efforts. For students, Cornhuskin’ includes an entire week of events, but here are some that parents and families may enjoy attending:

Can Art
This event takes place on Wednesday, November 1 at 4 p.m. outside in the courtyard of Meredith’s campus. Each class creates a design related to the theme that they have chosen for Cornhuskin’ week. While it can look like chaos from the ground, when you look from above you can see how the soda cans are slowly taking shape into a work of art! At the conclusion of Can Art, all cans are recycled and donated. (As students are preparing for this event they may ask for your donations of empty soda cans – so keep those close by to help your student’s class!)

Another exciting aspect of Cornhuskin’ is the parade on the afternoon of Friday, November 3! The parade begins at 3:30 p.m., so stop by to see the excitement as the classes proudly display their themes and march through campus! This event is open to anyone who wishes to observe, but we ask that all spectators keep the roadways clear of foot traffic, leave all animals (outside of service animals) at home, and carefully watch all minors.

Following the parade, but before the Cornhuskin’ main event starts, there will be a picnic for all Meredith community members starting at 4:45 p.m. The picnic is a great opportunity to spend some time with your student in between the parade and the main event!

Cornhuskin’ Main Event
An evening of events where classes compete against each other in skits, corn shuckin’, songs, apple bobbin’ and more! This event is hosted in the Meredith Amphitheater on the evening of Friday, November 3 and begins at 6 p.m. All guests wishing to sit inside the amphitheater must have a wristband, so if you are interested in attending, make sure you tell your student! An email will be sent to all students on October 23 with a link to guest registration. Students are responsible for clicking the link and registering for guest wristbands beginning at 11:59 p.m. when the link goes “live”. Students will enter their name, classification, email address, phone number, and the number of wristbands requested (1 or 2). This process allows students to enter the system on a first-come, first-served basis. Our survey system, Qualtrics, will generate a list of all entries in time order of submission and available guest wristbands will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Completing this request does not guarantee your guest(s) a seat in the Amphitheater. Never fret, however, because if your student is unable to obtain a guest wristband there is still seating available within Jones Chapel to watch a live stream of the event, and there will be lawn seats on a first-come, first-served basis near the amphitheater for live viewing (this seating can be “claimed” no earlier than 8 a.m. on November 3).

Other traditions to look forward to participating in with your Meredith student include Guardian Angel Dance in which each sophomore student may invite a male role model to attend, Tea for Two in which each sophomore student may invite a female role model to attend, Senior Family Night and, of course, Commencement!
