League of Women Voters Political Issues Series to Be Held at Meredith

Meredith College and the League of Women Voters of Wake County announce a new discussion series examining government process and policy issues important to all citizens. This series is sponsored by the Meredith College Civil Communication Task Force.

This series will feature speakers from the political left and right discussing the current state of government and politics in the state and giving audience members ideas how citizens can be more involved.

Audience members will not only listen to the speakers’ ideas, but be given ample opportunity to react to and discuss these ideas in small groups. One of the goals of this series is to give people a forum to talk about important political issues without resorting to yelling and screaming.

Each session meets from 6:30-8 p.m. on the Meredith campus. The schedule and topics are as follows:

September 19   Political power in North Carolina: How can citizens have more influence?

October 17       Government services and taxes in NC: What is the most effective and fair way to pay for the service we need?

November 14   Demographic changes affecting NC government: How is the changing face of North Carolina affecting government?

January 16       Infrastructure needs in North Carolina: How do we get the physical and digital infrastructure across the state to support a 21st Century economy?

February 20     Education: How can we produce better educational outcomes for all students in North Carolina?

March 20        Fair and honest elections: How can the state increase democratic participation and ensure the legitimacy of elections?
