How to Support Students Interested in Study Abroad

Students can study abroad at Meredith in the summer, fall, or spring, but planning a study abroad experience often begins in the year leading up to a program. With the Fall 2022 semester in sight, students interested in studying abroad can be on the lookout for events and opportunities to engage with the Office of International Programs (OIP) and learn more.

One of our office’s biggest events, the Study Abroad Fair, is a wonderful place for students to start learning more about Meredith’s study abroad programs. The 2022 Study Abroad Fair for students will be held on Tuesday, September 27 from 5-7 p.m. in the Belk Dining Hall Courtyard. All Summer 2023 programs will be announced at the Study Abroad Fair, and Meredith faculty-led program representatives and affiliate program providers will be at the fair to showcase their programs and help students hone their interests.

Even incoming freshmen can start thinking about study abroad opportunities this semester. Meredith’s Fall 2023 Semester in Italy program is designed for first-semester sophomores with its focus on general education requirements. That means students in the Class of 2026 can look forward to studying abroad for a semester as soon as a year from now.

The OIP recognizes that study abroad can be a significant financial commitment, which is why our office offers regular funding workshops for students, as well as generous scholarships and financial aid for study abroad programs. We encourage all students to apply for scholarships and financial aid. Additionally, Meredith-based financial aid packages travel with students for their first semester study abroad experience, and our office provides scholarships specific to semester-long programs.

Studying abroad for a summer or semester can work for any student who is ready to work with their academic advisor and our study abroad advisors in the OIP, regardless of class year or major. In summer 2022, students ranging from rising sophomores to newly-graduated members of the Class of 2022 to graduate students studied abroad on 11 Meredith faculty-led programs in four countries.

The OIP was able to send students abroad in summer 2022 with continued careful monitoring of national and international COVID-19 guidance and travel advisories. While the pandemic continues to impact all travel abroad, Meredith is committed to offering safe, pandemic-resilient study abroad opportunities where students can hone skills like flexibility and problem-solving.

Students interested in studying abroad on a Spring 2023 Meredith affiliate program should connect with the OIP to begin advising before the September 30 application deadline. Students interested in studying abroad in summer or fall 2023 can remember the application deadline of February 15, 2023, attend the Study Abroad Fair, and visit the OIP in Lux 124 or at www.meredith.edu/OIP to learn more about the application process.
