First-Year Honor Society Begins Spring Membership Drive
- Published
Alpha Lambda Delta, an honor society dedicated to recognizing first-year academic success, is currently recruiting new members at Meredith College. Established on campus in 1989, Alpha Lambda Delta provides an excellent opportunity to celebrate and encourage the achievements of first-year students. Nationally, the society is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS) and has a proud history dating back to the early 1920s.
The Meredith College chapter has a history of excelling at the national level. This past fall, Carly O’Toole received the Jo Ann J. Trow Undergraduate Scholarship, and Sarah Shelton was awarded the James G. Stemler Study Abroad Scholarship. Meredith students have received national scholarships in 2023, 2021, 2020, and 2019, demonstrating the chapter’s commitment to supporting academic and personal development.
Eligible students will receive email invitations in February if they are new to college and earned a GPA of 3.5 or higher during their first semester at Meredith. In addition to the email, the chapter will mail a congratulatory letter addressed “to the family of ___,” ensuring parents are also informed. Many times, parents are the first to see the information and encourage their student to check their email.
“We hear from many students who accept membership that they are thrilled to join an honor society so early in their college journey,” says Lisa Brown, Co-Director of the First Year Experience and the chapter’s advisor. “It gives them a boost of confidence that they are on the right path and capable of succeeding in college.”
Membership in Alpha Lambda Delta offers students the chance to connect with peers who share high academic goals, explore leadership opportunities early in their college careers, and engage in service and social activities that complement their classroom experiences.
If your student is eligible, be sure to remind them to check their email and consider joining. Each year, a few students miss out because they overlook the invitation, doubt its legitimacy, or don’t understand the value of early academic recognition.
“Students often regret not joining when they later see the benefits of membership,” shares Brown. “A simple reminder from home can make all the difference.”
The recruitment period runs from February 6 to March 8, 2025. The Induction Ceremony for new members will be held on March 24 at 7 p.m., and families are invited to attend.
