Faculty/Staff Accomplishments December 2021

In this issue, we celebrate the accomplishments of faculty and staff in art, economics, the president’s office, and sociology.

President Jo Allen participated in “Women: A Force in Business,” an event sponsored by the N.C. Chamber on November 16, 2021. She moderated a session called Degrees of Leadership: Projecting Your Potential and Talent, which featured executives from SAS, LabCorp, Walk West, and Bioventus. 

Professor of Art Shannon Johnstone‘s new series “Roadside Zoo” won an Honorable Mention in the 2021 International Photography Awards in the “Deeper Perspectives” category. This series depicts the lives of enslaved animals in seven of North Carolina’s still operating roadside zoos. https://www.photoawards.com/winner/zoom.php?eid=8-216410-21

Johnstone also had new work from a different series that uses infrared thermal imaging in the 2021 SECAC (SouthEast College Art Conference) Juried Art Exhibition. The exhibition was juried by Joey Yates, Curatorial Director of KMAC Museum in Louisville, KY. 

Associate Professor of Sociology Kris Macomber was quoted in a 19th* article about the increasing use of social media as a tool for public safety. The article was titled “The hand gesture that saved a teenager shows how TikTok can help victims escape.” Read it at 19thnews.org/ The 19th* is an independent, nonprofit newsroom reporting on gender, politics, and policy. 

Professor of Economics Anne York provided expertise about the impact of manufacturing on the North Carolina economy in a WRAL Techwire article about the announcement of Toyota’s plans to build a battery plant at a facility in the Triad region.
