Faculty/Staff Accomplishments and News Briefs 9/6/23

In this issue, we celebrate the accomplishments of faculty and staff in art, chemistry, English, music, and psychology. We also share News Briefs with updates about DEI professional development opportunities and Meredith Tennis hosting an event for Special Olympics.

Assistant Professor of Chemistry Andrea Carter attended the National Conference to Advance POGIL Practice (NCAPP) in Utah this summer. Attendance at the conference was by application only and restricted to educators experienced in implementing the POGIL (Process-Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning) method, which Dr. Carter uses in her physical chemistry courses. The conference included a variety of participant-centered sessions, such as roundtable discussions, professional development workshops, and feedback sessions for new POGIL activities.

Visiting Assistant Professor / Gallery Director Todd Jones has a solo exhibition at Gallery 406 at Elon University until October 19. An opening reception and visiting artist talk will occur on September 11 at 5:30 p.m. in Gallery 406 at Elon University. Jones’s work is process-driven, creating layered blocks of salvaged mistint and discarded house paint that is molded and carved into new forms. A visual record of history is made by exposing the repetitive layers and the lost hopes and dreams each colored layer represents. This body of work reflects consumerism, memory, and identity.
