Faculty/Staff Accomplishments and News Briefs 12/7/22

In this issue, we celebrate the accomplishments of faculty and staff in communication, education, marketing, political science, and psychology. We also share information about a Cooperating Raleigh Colleges Virtual Workshop opportunity for staff.

News Director Melyssa Allen and Professor of Communication Teresa Holder attended the NC Public Relations Society of America (NCPRSA) Strategic Communication and Marcom Conference on November 18, at NC State’s McKimmon Center. The conference included a media panel featuring local reporters and editors, a keynote by the social media manager for Pandora Jewelry, and sessions on media training, digital marketing, and communication during times of disruption.

Associate Professor of Communication Lynn Owens moderated the panel “How to Survive and Thrive in Today’s Newsroom” at the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNAC) conference in November.

Assistant Professor of Psychology Betty-Shannon Prevatt attended the American Public Health Association annual conference in Boston on November 7-9, to support two students whose independent projects were accepted for poster presentations. Alumna Joselyn Marroquin Aparicio, ’22, presented her research, Examining Pre-pandemic and COVID-19-era Postpartum Mental Health. Rayna Maleki, ’23, also had a poster presenting her research, Suicidal Ideation During the Antenpartum and Postpartum Period. Both students’ projects were products of their work with the Advancing Insight into Maternal Social Support (AIMSS) study lab which is run by Dr. Prevatt and Dr. Pamela Norcross, Assistant Professor of Child Development. For more information about the study, and to see the students’ posters, visit the AIMSS website at https://aimssresearch.com/study-findings/

Professor of Education Julie Schrock and Associate Professor of Political Science Whitney Ross Manzo presented a poster called “Implementing a Peer Coaching Faculty Learning Community (FLC): Lessons Learned” at the Professional and Organizational Development Network meeting in Seattle on Friday, November 18. The poster discusses how we started the Peer Coaching PDC at Meredith and some of the benefits that the faculty who participated gained from it, including feeling validated in their work, getting feedback on their teaching that is more useful than student evaluations, and learning new teaching techniques.

Cooperating Raleigh Colleges Virtual Workshop on the Integration of Equity
Meredith College staff are invited to participate in the Cooperating Raleigh Colleges (CRC) virtual workshop, “The Integration of Equity: Why Is It Important & How to Achieve It,” on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, from 3 – 4 p.m.

Workshop Description: Diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace have always mattered, but recently, many of us have recognized the opportunity for change now. This change for many of us is no longer an option but has become essential. One must first understand the meaning and significance of all three variables; diversity, equity, and inclusion. DEI is for everyone and must involve employees at every level of an organization, regardless of their differences. The Implementation of equity must be intentional and well-designed. Leaders must thoroughly examine policies, procedures, and environments. In this session, we will discuss the importance of integrating equity in all the things we do as we do it and not after we do it. Putting equity at the heart of what you are doing could potentially have greater benefits than the thing you are doing.
