Faculty/Staff Accomplishments and Departmental News 2/22/17

In this issue, we celebrate the accomplishments of faculty and staff in the departments of art, education, music, sociology, and theatre. We also share news about the Spring All-Staff Meeting and the Department of Theatre’s strong showing at the regional Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.

A photograph from Associate Professor of Art Shannon Johnstone‘s Landfill Dogs was featured in the “Collective Experience” Main Exhibition at the 2017 Chiang Mai Photography Festival in Thailand. The exhibition was curated by Patricia Lois Nuss.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology Kris Macomber co-organized a workshop at the 2016 Chrysalis Network conference in December. The title of the workshop was “A Call to Action: Researching Prevention and Response Needs on Women’s College Campuses.”

Professor of Education Marge Terhaar-Yonkers has recently joined the Board of Directors of Chamber Music Raleigh, as treasurer.

Director of Instrumental Activities Jim Waddelow conducted the top 90 orchestra students in Charlotte, N.C., in a weekend-long workshop that culminated in a performance of works by Rossini and Charbier.

Spring All-Staff Meeting Scheduled
Meredith’s Spring 2017 All-Staff Meeting will be held on March 23, at 10 a.m. in Kresge Auditorium. (Refreshments will be served beginning at 9:30 a.m.) Scheduled speakers include President Jo Allen, and representatives from the Student Government Association, Facilities, Institutional Advancement, Human Resources, Admissions, and Marketing. Staff who are unable to attend in person have the option of registering to attend remotely. Register here

Meredith Faculty Earn Recognition at Regional Theatre Festival
At the recent regional Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, held in Statesboro, Ga., the Meredith theatre faculty earned three awards of excellence in direction and five awards of excellence in design. Professor of Theatre Cathy Rodgers received an award of excellence for her direction of Lysistrata. Associate Professor of Theatre Steven Roten received an award of excellence for his direction of Suddenly Last Summer and Waiting for Godot. LeGrande Smith received an award of excellence for the costume design of Merrily We Roll Along. Assistant Professor of Theatre Jenni Mann Becker received awards of excellence in design for Waiting for Godot and Suddenly Last Summer, and Lysistrata, and excellence in applied technology for Lysistrata. The faculty was honored to strongly represent Meredith College, along with Meredith theatre students, at this showcase and competition.
