In this issue we celebrate the accomplishments of faculty and staff in biological sciences, child development, music, nutrition, and political science. We also share departmental news about Taste of Research, Fall Friends of the Library events, and Sizzlin’ September.
Professor of Biological Sciences Francie Cuffney has taken on the position of President of the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions, Inc., as of August 1. This is a two-year term. As part of this position she also serves on the American Association of Medical Colleges – Council on Admissions.
Instructor of Biological Sciences Susan Gardner’s paper and accompanying cover art was accepted by the Journal of Bacteriology. The title of the paper is “Interaction of Copper Toxicity and Oxidative Stress in Campylobacter jejuni.” The article is about the project Gardner worked on while in Jonathan Olson’s lab at NC State. The cover art is a design that her son’s partner, Betty Lou Poston, made using micrographs and Gardner’s photos of experiments taken in Dr. Olson’s lab. The paper will be in issue 21 of the journal.
Assistant Professor of Food & Nutrition Lanae B. Hood’s article, “Implementation of a WIC clinic farmers’ market improves accessibility and consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables among WIC farmers’ market nutrition program participants,” was published in the Journal of Hunger & Environmental Nutrition.
Professor of Biological Sciences and Environmental Sustainability Erin Lindquist chaired an Inspire Ignite special session at the Ecological Society of America (ESA) annual meeting in New Orleans titled “Ecological Research as Education Network (EREN): Multi-site collaborative research in the undergraduate curriculum” on August 9, 2018. Assistant Professor of Political Science Whitney Ross Manzo presented a paper at the annual meeting of the American Political Science Association in Boston on August 31. The paper, “Gender Balance Laws for Boards and Commissions: How Do They Stack Up?,” is part of Manzo and Professor of Political Science David McLennan’s larger project on women in appointed office. This study compares three states across the spectrum of gender balance laws- Iowa, with gender balance mandate, North Carolina, with gender balance recommendation, and Arizona, with no gender balance mention at all- to determine whether and how gender balance laws affect actual board and commission composition.

Also coming this fall, the library is pleased to announce a Fall 2018 Quail Ridge Partnership event featuring Jodi Picoult who will be discussing her new novel, A Spark of Light. From the bestselling author of Small Great Things comes a provocative and timely new novel. One fall morning, a gunman enters a women’s reproductive health clinic and begins shooting, taking everyone inside hostage, including the hostage negotiator’s daughter. Each chapter counts backward an hour earlier in the day, tracking the lives of the men and women involved, including the medical staff at the center, the shooter, and the hostage negotiator outside, tracing the story back to what brought these people to this place on this day. This event is on Thursday, October 4, 2018 at 7:00pm. To get tickets and more information you can check the Quail Ridge events calendar, or you can check out the recently updated Quail Ridge Books Partnership page.
