Professor of History Dan Fountain’s article, “The Role of Baptist and Meredith College Leadership in White Supremacist Advocacy and Policy in Early Twentieth-Century North Carolina,” was published in the January 2022 issue of the North Carolina Historical Review. The article, which is the result of research completed as part of the Meredith College Universities Studying Slavery Research Team, demonstrates how the College’s leaders and faculty were directly engaged with the Democratic Party’s 1898 White Supremacy Campaign and actively supported the implementation of Jim Crow in North Carolina. Fountain’s public history practicum course this semester will engage with those findings as they work with the Meredith College Archives to update and augment the current public presentation of the College’s institutional history.

Director of Visual Communications Vanessa F. Harris was recently elected to serve a three-year term, beginning January 1, on the Board of the University and College Designers Association (UCDA). UCDA inspires designers working in academia in North America and around the world by delivering relevant programming and benefits in a personal and thoughtful way. The organization provides for the professional and personal growth of its members and advocates for designers’ and educators’ roles within their institution. UCDA works to elevate the importance of design overall.
