Faculty/Staff Accomplishments 11/2/22

In this issue, we celebrate the accomplishments of faculty and staff in child development, communication, and political science.

Associate Professor of Political Science Whitney Ross Manzo gave a presentation on Feminist Public Policy for the WomenNC organization on September 25. In October, she and Professor of Political Science David McLennan wrote an op-ed that was published in The Hill. It  discussed Meredith Poll results and Generation Z voters. Manzo has been appointed to serve on the Executive Council of the Southern Political Science Association for a three-year term.

Professor of Political Science David McLennan published two op-eds in The Hill. One, with co-author Associate Professor of Political Science Whitney Ross Manzo examined the conservative tendencies of Gen Z. The second argues that women over the age of 50 will be the most significant segment of the voting population this year. In addition, McLennan has spoken to many groups during the election season, such as the Wilson Public Library (on voting laws), the Coastal Federal Credit Union PAC (on the electoral landscape for 2022), the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (on the fundamentals of midterm elections), and the Cardinal retirement community (on misinformation and conspiracy theories in this year’s campaigns).

Assistant Professor of Child Development Pamela Norcross is a founding member of the advocacy group Child Life Academic Society. She participated in the first annual summit in October 2022 in Boston. Dr. Norcross was a part of the planning committee for the summit, and presented “Considerations in the Child Life Student Experience.”Instructor of Communication Linda Shields has been named one of the “Top 50 Women to KNOW in North Carolina.” The KNOW book is a resource focused on highlighting the ideas and achievements of dynamic and successful women. She will be featured in the North Carolina book in 2023. Shields has been an adjunct faculty member at Meredith since 2017. This semester, she has welcomed local leaders including Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin and WRAL-TV Anchor Adam Owens as guest speakers in her public speaking and business and professional communication classes.
