Doing Good While Earning Points for Corn!

On Friday, October 28, Meredith students, staff, and faculty participated in a Yam Jam event with the Food Bank of North Carolina as part of the Cornhuskin’ 2022 Service Project. 

Students have traditionally participated in the Corn Service Project in order to gain points for their class for the Cornhuskin’ competition, and this year staff and faculty were invited to also come help with the fun and spirit of this event. 

A Food Bank tractor-trailer brought a truckload of sweet potatoes and participants sorted the locally-grown potatoes into 5-10 lbs bags. These potatoes and the work provided by students and staff helped to provide 7,500 meals to families in need across the central and eastern parts of the state. 

While bagging potatoes, students and staff were educated on food insecurity by Service Scholars Jessica Tan and Caroline Lewis. Students were invited to test their knowledge of this pressing issue by answering a trivia question and were awarded candy. All in all, it was a pretty sweet way to spend a beautiful, corny afternoon!
