Crisis in Ukraine: A Message from President Allen
- Published
Dear Meredith community,
Much of the world continues to watch in horror and disbelief as attacks unfold in independent and sovereign Ukraine. On behalf of the College, I offer compassion to Ukrainians whose families and lives are disrupted by war, violence, and loss. We also feel for the Russian citizens experiencing anguish because of the decisions made by their government.
We support all members of our community whose lives have been torn apart by this war, particularly our students, employees, and alumnae/i with ties to Ukraine and Russia. Meredith community members from across campus have expressed their care and concern. I thank our Office of International Programs staff for their work connecting with students from the affected areas.
I also thank our Department of History, Political Science, and International Studies for its effort to build more understanding through an informational webinar on Ukraine and Russia held on March 9, 2022. Watch a recording of the information session
If you feel moved to take action, ways to show support could include donating to reputable international relief organizations, volunteering with local organizations, or writing to your elected representatives to share your concerns. And you can pray for a peaceful and quick resolution. Students may also want to consider becoming involved in the Meredith International Association and our Refugee and Immigrant Club.
If global conflict or strain, in these countries and others, impacts you or your family, I encourage you to use your Meredith resources. Students who need support are encouraged to make use of the professional resources available here at Meredith, including the Office of International Programs, the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) office, Counseling Center, Chaplain, and Dean of Students staff. Our Human Resources office and the Chaplain can also serve as resources for employees.
Thank you for your concern for all who are suffering during this time.
Sincerely,
Jo Allen, ’80
