Congressman David Price Holds Town Hall at Meredith

Congressman David Price (D-NC) held a town hall event for Meredith students and the campus community on October 18, 2017, in Carswell Concert Hall.
Price, North Carolina’s longest serving member of Congress, represents the Fourth Congressional District, which includes Meredith College.
The event was an opportunity for students to practice political advocacy and civil communication. Price fielded questions about DACA, support for Puerto Rico after hurricane, ways that political leaders can reach students, and environmental issues.
He also discussed the highly partisan nature of Washington.
“We are in a period where it is hard to come together to pass meaningful legislation,” Price said. “The partisan divide, which has been growing for quite some time, is very deep. Even in areas where we think we have room for agreement, the zone of cooperation has become much smaller.”
Meredith’s civil communication initiative is a proactive effort to foster respectful communication and conflict management on campus. Price supports efforts, like Meredith’s, to build an environment of civil communication.
“Civil conversation is the way democracy needs to work,” Price said. “We need constant dialogue and debate.”
A member of the House Appropriations Committee, Representative Price is the ranking Democrat on the House Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development Appropriations Subcommittee. Prior to serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, Price was a political science professor at Duke University.
