Athletics Update 2/15/17

The Meredith College basketball Angels concluded the season this month with a win over Mary Baldwin. Four-year senior guard Jessi Hayes, who was recognized prior to tipoff, departs Meredith athletics as a top-six record holder in 11 career categories.

Meredith’s newest sport of track & field launched an indoor season this year competing in three meets. Freshman Essence Thomas reached the Division III South/SE Region top-30 performance list in three events, and sophomore Demonica Stanley ranks 40th and 41st in the 60m sprint and shot put, respectively. The outdoor track & field season opens March 3 at UNC-Pembroke, and the Avenging Angels will look to move up the regional ranks.

Softball opened at home February 11 and hosted nationally ranked Christopher Newport last weekend. The Angels defeated the 16th-ranked Captains 5-4. Lacrosse traveled to Virginia for a challenging match versus national ranked University of Mary Washington to open the season, and both teams will face more ranked programs throughout the spring season. Both softball and lacrosse will be in action at home Saturday with softball hosting games Sunday as well.

Tennis continues their tough stretch opening series with two more NCAA Division II programs this week. The Avenging Angels faced Barton yesterday and host the Chowan Hawks Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. Take a break from your busy day to catch a set or two.

The Meredith College athletics department launched a new online store last month featuring a host of logo options, customizable features, name brand gear, and a wide variety of products. Check it out at!

Take advantage of these warm winter temperatures to get that golf swing ready for the 19th Annual Meredith Golf Classic Monday, April 24 at Brier Creek Country Club. Not a golfer? No problem. Tournament organizers seek support of individuals, local businesses, and organizations with sponsorships, as well as items for the raffle and silent auction.
