Assessment Matters from RPA 11/8/16

SACSCOC Update: Meredith College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). In March 2016, we submitted our fifth-year interim report, covering some 22 standards, including a report on the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), known as Think Strong. In July we were notified of a successful review of all standards. Subsequently, SACSCOC requested that our report be displayed as an exemplar in the resource room and also that we host a session at the national SACSCOC conference in December. Only a few institutions receive such recognition. Thanks goes to all those who participated in providing data and in writing sections of the report!

Some recent survey results: Each summer RPA works with the Office of International Programs to evaluate Meredith students’ study abroad experiences. This year, Meredith students studied in six different countries. Surveyed students fielded questions on topics ranging from the choice of excursion sites, to the advantages of studying abroad and its impact on the development of their cultural values.  For instance, School of Business students studying in China noted how important it was to witness firsthand trade practices abroad. A number of students also commented on the distinctly different styles of communication and technology use in China, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. In summing up her experience one student said, “Thinking and looking at your culture through a different lens always makes you think more about what you’re used to.”

The Office of International Programs uses this information to assess learning and program outcomes, as well as to plan future programs. Brooke Shurer, the Director of International Programs at Meredith, says “Our partnership with RPA has been invaluable. Over the past few years, we have utilized survey results to improve our processes, refine our learning outcomes, improve our understanding of prospective applicants, and explore new opportunities for growth. This survey data allows us to act with intentionality as we continuously seek to enhance the educational experience of study abroad.”
