Students working on laptops “Historical Knowledge, 21st Century Tools”
Our students emerge from Meredith’s History program career-ready and competitive in our increasingly service-driven economy where human interaction is in demand and computers cannot perform the work. The skills learned in studying the past still prepare students for traditional careers in law, government, education, and historical or cultural institutions but also enable graduates to compete successfully in the global marketplace.  Business publications like Forbes, Business Insider, and the Wall Street Journal regularly tout liberal arts majors’ abilities to:

  • communicate orally and in writing
  • analyze and synthesize data
  • frame compelling arguments
  • understand global realities
  • connect with people

As a department that sends students into a wide variety of professional fields, we collaborate closely with the Office of Career Planning to engage students in mock interviews, networking events, career panels, and resume workshops.  We encourage students who are interested in careers in business to pair a history major with a business minor, strategic internships, foreign language skills, or carefully selected electives. Combining a robust liberal arts education with specific technical training provides students excellent preparation in what the National Association of Colleges and Employers identifies as Career Ready Competencies.  In short, if you want to MAKE HISTORY, STUDY IT!
