Meredith’s Loved Traditions

Traditions are the heart of Meredith’s rich student life! They’re a great way to get involved on campus, connect with other students, and make unforgettable memories. In today’s blog, we go over a few of Meredith’s most loved traditions.

Corn

Corn is a weeklong fall celebration that comprises a parade, a raid on the president’s house, and a friendly competition between classes. Judged on their can art, class attendance, sweatshirt design, and performances, the winning class receives the Meredith Pride Spirit stick.

Class Ring

Designed in 1953, the Meredith Class Ring symbolizes the connection between classmates, the College, and current and future alumnae. The ring is an oval onyx surrounded by silver or gold with the Meredith seal engraved on the onyx and oak leaves impressed on the band.

During your junior year, you will likely be eligible to purchase a ring and participate in Ring Week. During the week, it’s tradition to wear “placeholder” rings decorated with daisies, Alice cards, angel wings, and more. The week ends with Ring Dinner, where you can officially wear your class ring and celebrate the accomplishment of being halfway through earning your degree.

The Meaning of the Onyx

Fire and Water

At the end of the academic year, first-year students celebrate and reflect on a successful transition to college at the Fire and Water dinner. The celebration includes a formal dinner, special entertainment, and a ceremony where each student writes down their worst and best memories of their first year. The worst memory gets tossed in a fire pit, and the best memory is floated in the Elizabeth Triplett Beam fountain. After the ceremony, the Big Sis’ class serenades the first-year class in Johnson Hall.

Sizzilin’ September Street Fest

As the first big event of the academic year, Sizzilin’ September is a festive send-off to the summer! The event features food trucks, live music, and fun games.

Stunt

Another opportunity for friendly class rivalry, Stunt is an annual field day full of competition, creativity, and fun. Activities can include tug of war, lip syncing, limbo, and more. At the end of the day, the class with the most points is named the winner of Stunt.
