Confidential and Private Resources at Meredith College

Definitions:

Confidential Resources:

Individuals or offices that are not required to report incidents without the individual’s consent, except in cases of immediate health or safety concerns. These resources offer a secure and supportive environment for individuals to discuss issues with the assurance that their disclosures will remain confidential.

Private Resources

Individuals or offices that strive to protect privacy but may be required to report incidents or take further actions in response to concerns related to inappropriate behavior, safety risks, or legal obligations. While they will protect your privacy to the greatest extent possible, they may need to share information on a need-to-know basis with others who also have a responsibility to address the situation. For example, if someone reports misconduct or potential harm, even if they request confidentiality, the private resource may be required to take action, such as investigating the matter, notifying appropriate parties (like supervisors, legal counsel, or administrators), and implementing necessary corrective measures. Every effort will be made to conceal the identity of the reporting individual, and protections, including whistleblower safeguards, will be offered to prevent retaliation.

Confidential Resources for Students:

  • Counseling Center: Offers crisis intervention, short-term counseling, and psychological consultation. Open Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. After-hours support is available during the academic year by contacting the Resident Director on duty at (919) 612-6350 or Campus Police at (919) 760-8888.
  • Student Health Center: Provides medical services and support. All services are confidential unless disclosure is legally required.
  • Office of the Chaplain: Offers spiritual support and counseling to students. Conversations are kept confidential in accordance with ethical standards.

Confidential Resources for Employees:

  • Office of the Chaplain: Serves as the sole confidential resource for employees regarding Title IX matters. Employees can seek spiritual support and counseling with assurance of confidentiality.

Private (Non-Confidential) Resources:

Private resources aim to protect individuals’ privacy but may be required to report certain information to ensure campus safety, compliance with legal requirements, or address inappropriate behavior. While they strive to respect confidentiality, these resources may need to share information on a need-to-know basis with appropriate parties.

For Students:

  • Dean of Students Office: Supports students with concerns, upholds student rights and responsibilities, and addresses a wide range of student issues.
  • Campus Police: Ensures campus safety, responds to incidents, and may intervene in emergencies.
  • Coordinator of Campus Community and Culture: Promotes an inclusive campus environment and addresses concerns related to community well-being and student life.
  • Disability Services: Provides accommodations and support for students with disabilities, ensuring equal access to campus resources.
  • Office of International Programs: Supports international students and oversees study abroad programs, assisting with visa issues, cultural integration, and academic needs.
  • Student Leadership and Service: Encourages student involvement, leadership development, and service opportunities, fostering a sense of community on campus.
  • Human Resources (HR): Provides support to students regarding interactions with employees (e.g., faculty, staff, supervisors, or dining hall personnel), student work practices, payroll questions, Title IX matters, and other employment-related concerns. HR helps with resolving conflicts involving campus employees.

For Employees:

Office of Human Resources: The Office of Human Resources is committed to protecting the privacy of individuals to the greatest extent possible. However, there are certain situations where confidentiality cannot be fully maintained. For example, HR staff are required to report Title IX-related matters to the appropriate Title IX Coordinator, who will then provide additional support. Additionally, in cases involving safety, risk management, or other employment-related concerns, HR may need to share information with others. These disclosures will only be made on a need-to-know basis, and all individuals involved are also obligated to protect privacy. At all times, the privacy of the individual is respected and safeguarded within the bounds of legal and institutional obligations.
